Building a Website

How do I build a website for my Domain Name?

With Infinity Internet, you have 2 options to build your website:

A) Use our Website Builder to create or edit your site. With over 90 templates to choose from, you'll have your site up and running in no time! Our site builder is so easy to use, you don't need any web design experience at all. If you can browse the web, you can build a website! For more information, see our Website Builder FAQ.

OR...

B) You can create your website manually:

There are a few things you'll want when making a web page;

  • HTML program, that helps create the pages
  • An FTP (or related) program to upload the pages
  • Your websites information

Many HTML editors are WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), and will insert the HTML coding behind the scenes. Just layout the page as you would in a word processing program. Additionally, many word processing programs, such as Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect, will save pages as HTML. While these might not be as feature-rich as a dedicated HTML editor, they are very suitable for simple web pages. See you program's Help files for instructions.

You may want to take a look at our article about Learning HTML.

When uploading your homepage, it will need a valid top page name, valid names are as follows;

  • index.html
  • index.htm
  • index.shtml
  • index.php
  • Index.php
  • INDEX.PHP
  • index.php3
  • Index.php3
  • INDEX.PHP3
  • default.html
  • default.htm
  • welcome.html
  • welcome.htm

Without the correct homepage name, your website will display a "Directory Listing" which is a list of the files in your home directory.

Using one of the filenames above, browsing to your site with http://www.yourdomain.com/ is the same thing as http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html.

An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program will upload your web site files to the server. Some HTML editors will include and FTP utilitiy. You create the page and then "publish" them and this program facilitates things. The Help file for your program will explain how to do this.

There are also many standalone FTP programs which allow you to move individual files as you see fit.

Your information is important. No one has access to your web space but you. That means that you do not want to pass that information to others, and neither do you want to have such a simple password as a word in the dictionary. Security is a good thing. And your information is :

Host/Domain: www.yourdomain.com
Login/Username: Your Infinity Internet username. (Your e-mail address, minus the @iinet.com)
Password: Your current Infinity Internet password

This allows you to use the FTP program, and login. Once you are logged in, you can begin the upload process to a folder on the server. This folder, is always called "public_html" and is the designated folder for all web sites in the web.
